HISTORY OF HOLLYWOOD
The HOLLYWOOD GROUP has its roots in the publishing industry through group subsidiary Winning Form (Pty) Ltd. Winning Form started business in 1987 and the current stable of 8 publications comprises:

It is worth noting that Top Turf Pocket Guide is by far the biggest selling horseracing formguide in South Africa, selling double that of its nearest rival.
In order to provide an efficient and timeous distribution of our publications to retail outlets, Racing Distribution was formed in 1997 with depots in Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. We deliver to more than 2000 retail outlets throughout South Africa.
Hollywood opened its first betting branch in Argyle Road, Durban in 2000, followed by the opening of the current flagship, HollywoodPark in SpringfieldPark, a few kilometres away. The success of these outlets paved the way for a national expansion and today Hollywood operates 74 betting shops spread across South Africa, one branch in Lesotho, as well as a sophisticated betting website and mobisite. Hollywood’s name was inspired by the race track HollywoodPark in Los Angeles, USA. Hollywood was given this name as it invoked associations of celebrities, class, and most importantly, a very different image to what South African bookmaking had developed for itself in the past.
Hollywood has always focused on being the foremost bookmaking brand in South Africa, while simultaneously improving the image of horse racing and sports betting as an exciting form of entertainment. In order to achieve this objective we first had to change the perceptions of bookmaking. As a result our brand has broken the mould from the ticket-strewn floors, white plastic furniture and shabby facilities of old.
Everything that we have achieved since our inception has been innovative in terms of setting the market trend, which is what happens when you start out with practically no fundamental experience, but are fuelled with an unfaltering passion to succeed. We weren’t tied down to the tried and tested ways of the past and how everyone else was running their shops. We asked questions, we looked for opportunities to improve and we gave people what they wanted – an unbeatable atmosphere and an all-inclusive betting experience. These are the most treasured attributes that Hollywood possesses, which stem from the pleasant, friendly nature of all of our staff members who are always willing to help and pass on our winning smiles.
Due to the environment and surroundings in which we work, these smiles are made all the easier to come by. The colour palette is warm, inviting and upmarket. A variety of framed and action packed racing and sports pictures adorn the walls in between the numerous TV screens which create an engaging action-filled environment. Our personalised advertising is always positively worded to show off our many in house specials as well as the advantages of betting with Hollywood. We also provide each of our branches with comprehensive marketing and Hollywood betting literature that aims to give our customers all the necessary information they need to enjoy the experience of horse and sports betting. Another exclusive Hollywood offer is the detailed, easy to read form guides that are neatly displayed in specific areas around the shops.
Our day to day business is run by a dynamic management team with a vast amount of experience within the betting industry. We are supported by a dedicated and highly trained staff who are committed and passionate in serving our customers’ needs. In a young and vibrant industry, we are leading the way by creating the culture of genuinely wanting our customers to enjoy their betting and entertainment experience. This edge is evident in our marketing promotions and our staff mind-set. For example, we are the only betting shop in South Africa to give the punter his money back if his horse wins a race and is subsequently disqualified, (we are always looking for new promotions and specials that keep our punters winning and in turn, keep them coming back to our shops). Our staff instinctively share in the celebrations with a punter when he wins because we believe that if we look after our punters when they’re winning, we create a loyalty that will inevitably emphasize the fun and entertainment side of the Hollywood betting experience.
HOLLYWOOD SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PROGRAMME
The Hollywood Group continues to focus on the growth of our own team through our skills development programme. The appointment of a dedicated and experienced national training co-ordinator in 2012 has brought another level of professionalism to this aspect of our business. Each of the six regions in which we operate has a full-time training facilitator and four of the regions now have a dedicated training facility. In a country of high unemployment, particularly amongst the unskilled youth, we have taken it upon ourselves to employ capable young people who will grow with us. We are proud of our track record and we strive to continue to add value to the communities we service by not only providing a living for the team, but to develop them on a personal and professional basis. Hollywood is extremely proud of the fact that it has invested in excess of R2.6 million in skills development during the 2012 financial year.
Hollywood has extended the social responsibility initiative introduced last year where branches took on the duty of identifying and selecting worthy causes in their areas and identified the individual needs of those organisations. This initiative worked extremely well in 2012, not only in terms of providing these worthy organisations with some of their needs, but in engendering a sense of community within the Hollywood team. So much so that it has become company policy and very much a part of our culture. Working with these projects has made our lives more meaningful and the good work has had a positive impact on our communities, punters, and team which is evidenced in the testimonials that follow. It has certainly helped our team members develop into better team leaders and we take great pride in the continued success of this programme.
Over the last year we accelerated our growth by opening a further 20 branches, expanding our footprint in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Eastern Cape and Western Cape - 20 more organisations will benefit from this project. Furthermore, we can proudly say that we have reached a milestone of 74 retail branches nationally, increasing our team complement to over 2900 members.We once again express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the organisations for their invaluable and committed work in our communities and to the individual Hollywood branches for wholeheartedly supporting the programme and making it their own. Finally, I would like to thank our valued, loyal customers and our dedicated team members who make all this possible.
